Grant application instructions

St. Louis Wild Ones provides modest grants to non-profit organizations for landscaping projects incorporating native plants in an educational setting

Grant applications are evaluated by the local Wild Ones Board of Directors, and we make every effort to respond in a timely manner.

Grant applicants must be located within 40 miles of St. Louis. 

To complete the grant application you will need: 

1) Project Description
In a Word document (.doc or .docx) or PDF, describe your project including these points:

  1. In one or two sentences, what are the short- and long-term goals of the project?
  2. To what extent will the project achieve one or more of the following objectives:
    • Restore or develop the native plant community
    • Provide habitat for native wildlife
    • Educate others about the beauty and significance of native ecosystems
  3.  What groups and organizations will be involved in developing and maintaining this project? What are the ages of students or children involved?
  4. Who owns the project site? Describe their commitment to the project.
  5. What other funding will be used for developing and for maintaining this project?  
  6. How will long-term maintenance be assured?
  7. Are there any potential negative effects, such as use of pesticides in preparing the site, altering water run-off, etc.?
  8. Are there any invasive species on or near the site? If so, how do you plan to address them?
  9. If applicable, provide a sketch or diagram of the area including scale and direction, before and after completion of this project.
  10. Describe the site where you would like to plant. Is it sunny, shady or does it depend on time of day?  Is the ground normally dry, moist/wet, or inbetween? How wet does the site get when it rains, does the water remain for awhile? Is the ground very hard, very soft, or somewhere in the middle? 
  11. How did you choose the plants for this site? Did you have assistance?
  12. Please include a preliminary list of species you plan to plant. List scientific and common names, numbers of plants, and an estimate of the cost.
  13. What will be your sources for obtaining plants of local genotype?
  14. What is your planned timetable, including planting date(s)?

2) Photos

  • We require 1 photo of the project site, but you are able to submit a total of 3 photos. 
  • Please downsize your photos to be no more than 1 MB (1000 kb) in size 
  • If you have any trouble resizing your photos, just attach any photo that is the right size for Photo 1 and click the box below the file upload area and someone will contact you to get your photos.

3) Review the guidelines

Grant recipients must agree to the following guidelines:

  • The Chapter shall have the right to supply others with a description of the project and disseminate its underlying concepts and/or ideas.
  • I agree to acknowledge this funding source in any project publicity or printed materials.
  • A representative of the Chapter will periodically observe your garden. We offer to mentor you and your new garden if desired.
  • I will display the provided Wild Ones sign in the wildflower garden.
  • I will submit photos of the garden to the Chapter as able.
  • I will submit detailed invoices to the Chapter, that list the native plant species and quantity of each that was purchased, within 6 months of the date of the award letter, in order to be reimbursed for the plants. 
  • Plantings are typically done in spring or fall. School gardens must make arrangements for maintenance and watering during the first summer, especially for spring plantings.
  • The Chapter and sponsors and/or any of its agents, officials and employees shall assume no responsibility or liability for claims of damage of any kind to property or for claims of injury to any person in connection with a grant.
