
Wild Ones chapter leadership roles include positions on our local chapter’s board of directors and volunteer positions within committees that focus on specific activities such as event planning, programming, and public outreach.
The specific leadership roles and committee structure vary by chapter, but typical leadership functions involve planning educational programs, organizing plant sales, and coordinating outreach efforts to promote native plants within the community.
President
The chapter president is the Chapter’s chief executive officer and voting member on the chapter’s board. The Chapter President shall provide leadership and facilitate chapter activities to promote the mission and influence of Wild Ones within the region that the chapter serves. Key duties include:
- Form collaborations with sister chapters
- Facilitate partnerships with related organizations including Bring Conservation Home, Shaw Nature Reserve, Missouri Department of Conservation, etc.
- Lead chapter activities including board meetings, membership gatherings, etc.
- Sign contracts and other documents on the Chapter’s behalf
- Ensure that the decisions of the Chapter Board and votes by the Chapter members are implemented.
- Prepare the Chapter’s annual report, which the Chapter President shall present to the Chapter members at the Chapter’s annual meeting.
Vice President
The chapter vice president is a leadership role that supports the chapter president and the board of directors in carrying out strategic and operational goals. While not a required officer position, the vice president attends and participates in board meetings and contributes to leadership continuity and collaborative governance. Key duties include:
- Assisting the president and serving in their place
- Supporting the implementation of chapter goals and decisions
- Staying informed on chapter operations and Wild One’s policies and guidance
- Helping prepare the chapter’s annual report and the State of the Chapter Report (SOCR) and
- Leading or participating in committees, projects, or outreach efforts as needed.
Secretary
The secretary is a principal officer and voting member on the chapter’s board. The responsibilities of the chapter secretary include:
- Assist the Chapter President in determining the date, time, location, and agenda for the chapter board meetings.
- Record attendance and minutes of board meetings and distribute the same to board members and attendees.
- File board meeting minutes and assist with maintaining chapter records.
- Provide support for chapter nominations and elections, including issuance of nomination and election notices to the chapter membership.
- Periodically review the chapter’s bylaws to ensure chapter operations are in alignment with the bylaws.
Treasurer
The treasurer attends and participates in board meetings and is responsible for managing and maintaining accurate financial records. The treasurer collaborates with the chapter board to develop and monitor the chapter’s annual budget; ensures compliance with financial policies, rules, and regulations; and submits timely reports to the board and Wild Ones national office. Key duties include:
- Overseeing fundraising activities and ensuring proper documentation for all financial transactions
By maintaining financial transparency, security, and adherence to Wild Ones’ best practices, the treasurer plays a key role in supporting the chapter’s work to advance Wild Ones’ mission of promoting native landscapes.
Membership Chair
The membership chair is an officer and voting member of the chapter. Key duties include:
- Reaching out to and welcoming new members and providing information about the membership
- Updating the mail server with new member and expired membership information
- Setting up the membership table at gatherings to greet members, collecting sign-in information and providing pertinent information
- Periodically ordering permanent name tags
- Assisting the board in organizing a new member gathering
Board Member-At-Large
A board member-at-large attends and participates in board meetings, contributing to discussions and decisions that guide the organization. They may also serve on committees or assist with projects as needed. No specific officer duties are assigned to this role. The role is flexible and is defined by the chapter’s needs and the individual’s skills and interests.
