The St. Louis County Department of Planning and the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) recently announced the Native Commons demonstration project. Grant funds in the amount of $10,000 will be awarded to a subdivision in unincorporated St. Louis County to fund the transition of common ground to a native landscape.
Native landscaping involves using hardy, low-maintenance plants native to this area. By using native landscaping in common ground instead of traditional manicured turf, subdivision associations can reduce maintenance costs, increase on-site stormwater management, promote healthy ecosystems and create more attractive and sustainable neighborhoods. More information on native landscaping can be found in the Native Landscaping Guide.
