by Marsha Gebhardt, President, St. Louis Chapter
In case you haven’t seen it yet…our St. Louis Chapter’s founder, Scott Woodbury, was featured in the Fall 2022 Journal. The article, Wild Ones honors a native plant champion, was written by our member Jean Ponzi, who is green resources manager for the Earthways Center of MOBOT. It describes the founding of the St. Louis Chapter, now the largest in the country, almost 25 years ago. It goes on to describe Scott’s signature work developing the Whitmire Wildflower Garden at Shaw Nature Reserve.

In the article Scott credits three key partners for the garden’s ecological excellence: the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC); Mervin Wallace, founding owner of Missouri Wildflowers Nursery; and Carol Davit, executive director of the Missouri Prairie Foundation, and its program Grow Native! He also acknowledges his work with Jerry Pence, professor and horticulture program coordinator at St. Louis Community College – Meramec Campus.
Scott tells us that in the near future he looks forward to participating in Wild Ones St. Louis Chapter activities as a ‘regular member’. Meanwhile, enjoy reading about the work of our very own native plant champion and chapter founder. We wish him well as he transitions from his career at Shaw Nature Reserve to his new private business: Cacalia Design – Garden Design and Wilding. scott@cacaliadesign.com.
