Last year’s planting volunteers at Marlene Becker’s house

The 2018 Landscape Challenge planting day is almost here, and we need volunteers to come help install the plants.

In honor of our chapter’s 20th anniversary, we decided that this year’s candidate pool would be our current members. This year’s property was chosen by representatives of Wild Ones – St. Louis Chapter, and co-funded by the Missouri Botanical Society of St. Louis Community College Meramec. The winning property is in the Tower Grove area of St. Louis City.

Our 2018 Landscape Challenge winner, Dan Pearson, joined Wild Ones around 2 years ago and has the passion for wanting to learn more about Missouri’s native flora. He assists in yard surveys for the St. Louis Audubon Society’s Bring Conservation Home program. Dan recently participated in the MSD Project Clear program, and installed a native plant rain garden. His yard was also on this year’s Native Plant Yard Tour. He is very excited about his new native garden plans, and has already prepared the site!

Designer and chapter member Rob May has been working with Dan, and Shaw Nature Reserve’s Scott Woodbury, to create the design. Rob is a horticulture student at STLCC Meramec, and former president of the Meramec Botanical Society. This is his second year designing for the Landscape Challenge.

The planting will be in partial sun, in an area of the front yard near the street corner where Dan has already had many conversations about native plants with many interested people walking by at the busy intersection. The plant list has already been prepared and sent to Taylor Creek Restoration Nursery and Missouri Wildflowers Nursery.

Plan to participate in the planting, which will be:

Date: Sunday, September 23
Time: 10:00 a.m. until completion (possibly 1:00 p.m. or earlier depending on the number of volunteers)
Location: See sign-up link below.

Please bring a hand tool for digging. This is an excellent opportunity to learn and share knowledge about native plants and garden design.
